Many think that living in a big city can be expensive. This can be true for some cities, but Atlanta is a city full of affordable real estate and entertainment.

Living in this metropolis offers a large variety of inexpensive activities that will appeal to everyone. If you enjoy the outdoors, Atlanta has plenty of parks. Centennial Olympic Park is a lasting reminder from the Centennial Olympic Games. Piedmont Park is located just two miles from downtown and has the largest green space in the city and spans 189 acres. Stroll through the grounds or enjoy a picnic lunch alongside Lake Clara Meer. Downtown, you can also spend an enjoyable day outdoors at The Woodruff Park Reading Room. In partnership with the Fulton County Library, it’s an open-air reading room that has carts stocked with a selection of books, periodicals and newspapers with reading programs at lunchtime. Another reasonably priced excursion is a visit to Stone Mountain Park. Here you will see the world’s largest mass of exposed granite depicting some of our Confederate heroes. During Saturday evenings in the spring and fall, the face of the mountain lights up with an amazing laser show.

If you enjoy the arts and movies, there are some reasonable options. Atlanta is home to artifacts from around the world. At Emory University you will find the Michael C. Carlos Museum. It maintains the largest collection of ancient art in the Southeast with artifacts from Greece, Egypt and Rome. A few other museums to visit are the High Museum of Art and Oglethorpe University Museum. Take in a performance at the Horizon Theatre or sit under the stars at the Starlight Six Drive-In Theatre to enjoy a current major motion picture year-round for just six dollars a person. Window shopping through Castleberry Hill’s trendy art galleries can be a pleasant way to spend the afternoon.

For those eager to learn about Atlanta’s history, take a guided tour for six dollars with the Underground Atlanta History that takes participants around the many historic buildings and sites that defined Atlanta. The Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site is also a must see. It includes year-round tours of Dr. King’s birth home, church where his father preached and his and his wife’s, Coretta Scott King’s, final resting place. The King Center houses artwork and documents from that time period. There is also Atlanta’s Historic Oakland Cemetery where many fallen Civil War soldiers were laid to rest. The cemetery was founded in 1850 and is also the final resting place for many of Atlanta’s settlers and famous citizens like golfer, Bobby Jones, Gone with the Wind author, Margaret Mitchell and comedian Nipsy Russell. The grounds are littered with sculpture and include a botanical preserve with magnolias and ancient oaks.
